First Impressions
The look of shock on Brianaâs face makes me chuckle. For once she is caught by surprise. She gazes over at the riders lining up to take their places for the competition. âWhich rider is your mistress? The one with the red riding habit is quite pretty. She has a regal posture.â
âHenrietta is the one in the heather-grey riding habit.â
Briana strains to see her around the other riders. âVery athletic, yet handsome in her own way.â
I dare say my mistress would not be pleased with that assessment of her appearance. âI think she is quite lovely.â
Briana smiles. âSpoken like a loyal Jin.â
âTis true she cannot match your beauty, but she is kind and a good friend.â
There is a new judgmental side to Briana that is not very becoming. Has she learned it from her Master? Or has the power of being a genie gone to her head?
Briana takes my rebuff in stride. âNot who I would have picked for Nicholas, to be sure, but if you highly recommend her then I will be pleased with the match.â
Briana sounds just like my mother. Her innocence and free spirit are long gone. She is not the Briana I fell in love with. I should mourn the loss of the Irish girl I knew and loved, but I do not. Meeting her again has turned out to be a blessing. Now I can move on with my genie avocation and no longer dream of the life I thought Briana and I might have together. It turns out Headmaster Tahan was correct. Our match was not in either of our destinies.
The trumpet blares, announcing the beginning of the competition. I must push my reminiscence aside so that I can move closer to the competition field. âIf you will excuse me, I must attend to my mistress.â I give Briana a slight bow. âIt was good to see you again.â
Briana takes ahold of my arm. âEdmund, you will not tell your mistress about our conversation, will you?
âOf course not. I read Henriettaâs destiny as well, and I know you speak the truth. That was the reason I was not surprised at your revelation.â
A sigh of relief escapes her lipsâthe ones I once kissed. âI have made certain that everything has run perfectly for Nicholas.â
Knowing my history of mucking things up, I can understand Briana being concerned that I might ruin her perfect genie track record. Still, her observation stings a little. But I shake it off and turn my back to her and walk toward the competition field. My good friend and love from the academy has turned out to be a crushing disappointment.
I can hear Wesleyâs voice in my head say, âWelcome to the unrequited love club. The pain is real, and because of it you will become a better genie.â
By the time I make it back to the competition field, several riders have already completed the course. The woman in the red riding habit edges her white horse closer to the entrance. The judge signals for her to begin.
